Contrast in video editing is cutting between two or more different scenes to highlight the contrast between both of the scenes. For example having a poor family then cutting straight to a rich family is to make a difference more apparent.

Symbolism also know as intercutting which allows you to move from an main scene to another scene to create a symbolic connection towards the audience :like or example cut to a scene of people working how are on strike and then cut to the police stopping the strikers and then cut to animals getting slaughtered, then the viewers think that the animals and the strikers are related to each other.
